Leuven LKI Taskforce

Als onderzoekers en klinisch actieve (para-)medici binnen de oncologische setting van KU/UZ Leuven, hebben onze gedeelde zorgen en vraagstellingen ons bij elkaar gebracht. Graag willen we er samen alles aan doen om de patiënt in de beste omstandigheden, met de beste middelen, te helpen genezen, en zich ook goed te voelen op lange termijn. Bij patiënten die een behandeling voor kanker ondergaan, is dat namelijk niet steeds even evident. Graag willen we daarom de (neuro-)psychologische noden van patiënten in detail onderzoeken, en hun behandeling op die manier verder optimaliseren, met de focus op zorgen rond “Kanker en Cognitie”. ​Deze focusgroep is verbonden aan het Leuvens Kanker Instituut (LKI).

Teamleden

Ons interdisciplinair team bestaat uit specialisten vanuit verschillende disciplines:
oncologie, kinesitherapie, (neuro-)psychologie, ingenieurs-, biomedische wetenschappen, radiologie, radiotherapie.
​Dankzij deze samenwerking hopen we belangrijke vragen vanuit de klinische praktijk te beantwoorden aan de hand van up-to-date en wetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Onze missie

Vanuit klinische ervaringen en in overleg met families die in aanraking komen met kanker, pogen we wetenschappelijke onderzoeksvragen op te stellen en te beantwoorden. We weten dat er tijdens de behandeling voor kanker acute en langdurige neuropsychologische symptomen kunnen ontstaan, die de levenskwaliteit van de patiënt in belangrijke mate beïnvloeden. Dergelijke symptomen betreffen moeilijkheden in aandacht, geheugen, spraak, motoriek, vermoeidheid, (hoofd-)pijn, … Daarom proberen we te onderzoeken hoe specifieke klachten van patiënten (op korte en lange termijn) ​ontstaan, wat de onderliggende biologische mechanismen zijn, en welke patiënten meer risico lopen. Op basis daarvan onderzoeken we mogelijke interventies om dergelijke klachten te reduceren, dit vanuit een bio-psycho-sociaal model.
Dit uitgebreid onderzoek is enkel mogelijk dankzij onze sterke interdisciplinaire samenwerking.
